The Marble Jar System

Last week I retired the Star Chart. I didn't feel like it was working the way I wanted it to. Sure, the kids were doing what they were supposed to, but it wasn't curbing the unwanted behaviors (like fighting, whining, not listening) and Aurora would count how many stars she could still lose before the week was out.

Enter the Marble Jar System! I read about this in Parenting or Family Fun or one of those magazines.

To prepare, Aurora and I went to Hobby Lobby and got 2 small glass vases, 1 medium glass vase, some decorative pebbles for the marbles, ribbon, letter stickers, and decorative stickers. When we got home the kids decorate their jars and I made a print out of responsibilities and their marble designation.

On the print out, I used graphics instead of numbers for the marbles so that Alex would be able to count them and know how many. My judgment for the number of marbles was basically:

-Stuff that they just needed to do everyday and was part of life - 1 marble
-Stuff that still needed to be done everyday but required a little more effort - 2 marbles
-Stuff that required a lot of effort and/or wasn't done everyday - 3 marbles

I discussed the plan with the kids. Each time they did something on the list, they would get the designated number of marbles. Each time they had bad behavior or did something unacceptable, they would lose marbles, and Mom and Dad determined how many at the time. And sometimes Mom and Dad may give extra marbles if we see behavior that we think should be rewarded, like sharing nicely or doing something that wasn't asked of them. When their marble jar was filled up to the ribbon, they got a trip to the dollar store (a favorite place) to pick out a toy and a piece of candy.

The kids were super excited about it. They made sure that they received their marbles when they did things on the list. Occasionally when I asked Aurora to do something she would say, "Do I get a marble?" and we'd have to discuss how we help each other and do things around the house even when there is no "reward." That ended pretty quickly.

So far it's been working great. They are doing their chores. Aurora has no idea how many marbles she still needs to reach the top, so she continues to do what she needs to do. Adding and removing marbles is quick and easy and is easy to reward extra good behavior. Fighting can be curbed with a simple, 'Do I need to take some marbles away?"

It's been a week and their jars are about 1/3 full, so I'm guessing it'll take 3-4 weeks to fill it. My only concern is if that is too long for them to wait to be rewarded since they are still both so young. If it is, I may get smaller jars or move the ribbon down. But for now, it's working for us!

Father's Day..

We did Father's Day a little different this year, and I think we have a new tradition!

When we first got up, Daddy was still sleeping, and I was talking to the kids about what to make him for breakfast. They both decided we should go to McDonald's and get "Daddy's favorite breakfast." So we loaded into the car, still in our jammies, and picked up some breakfast from McDonald's and then came home and surprised him with some sausage biscuits.

Afterwards, the kids gave him his presents. Aurora got him some flip flops..."because you are always wearing Momma's flip flops in the yard and I heard her say that you are stretching them out."

Alex gave him a video game..."cuz Daddy likes games."

Then we all got ready and loaded into the car for a little road trip! We drive about an hour outside the city to a Fireworks Warehouse and let Daddy pick out fireworks for the 4th of July. All three of them had a blast looking at everything available and deciding what to get. At one point I turned around and Alex was trying to put a box of mortar shells, bigger than he is, into the cart! It was hilarious! I think this will definitely be a new tradition for Father's Day!

Things They Say...

Me: Alex, we can't watch this show. It's not appropriate.
Alex: But I LIKE inproprate!!

Man at the Post Office: This weather stinks!
Alex: So does my butt!

Aurora: How do you know that?
Me: Because I'm smart!
Aurora: Nu-uh, your Mom told you, didn't she?

Me: Sit up and eat.
Aurora: Sorry, I only hear sentences that are positive and end with 'please.'

Aurora: Your mouth is bigger than mine.
Me: No it's not, I don't talk as much as you do.
Aurora: You don't have as much to say.

Cliffs Amusement Park

For Aurora's birthday, she got the Cliff's tickets she had asked for, and also lots of money to spend. So this weekend we headed down there! We were a little bit crazy because it ended up being the hottest weekend in several years at 105 degrees! Luckily, they have lots of shade there and we got there right when it opened so it was only in the eighties.

This was Alex's first time going. We were a bit nervous about whether or not he would do the rides, because he is pretty timid when it comes to things like that. The awesome thing about Cliffs is that it is a small amusement park and kids 36 inches and taller can ride most of the rides as long as they have an adult with them. And we started out big - with the roller coaster!

Waiting for the roller coaster

When we first started moving, he looked terrified....I told him it was going to be loud and superfast like Rocket and would be fun. I wasn't sure how he liked it throughout the ride...but when we stopped he said he loved it and wanted to go again! I was relieved that he enjoyed it!

Second time on the roller coaster

After that, Daddy and Aurora went to ride some "big kid" rides and Megan and I took Alex to the little kid area. He was so excited to ride a helicopter and car! The helicopter was cool because they could make it go higher or lower by pulling on a lever. Alex had to use both hands and pull as hard as he could to get it to go up!

Both kids also did the bumper cars...I've never seen Alex grin so big! They didn't want to bump into anyone; just drive around and around! Afterwards, he said "Sister drove crazy!"

We let them play a couple of games too and Alex won this cool snake...

And Aurora won the biggest prize on one of the other games!!

We had a great time despite the heat. We love this place! Here are two videos - one of the bumper cars, and one of Josh and Aurora riding the Super Fire Ball - that girl is a dare devil!!!
